Ben E. King, morto il cantante di Stand by me

Ben E. King è morto all’età di settantasei anni. A riportare la triste notizia è il sito di Channel 4 che però ancora non cita le cause del decesso. Cantante soul e r’n’b, nel corso della sua lunga carriera ha raggiunto fama mondiale grazie alla hit Stand By Me pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1961. In Italia il brano fu portato al successo l’anno successivo da Adriano Celentano che ne tradusse il testo col titolo di Pregherò.

Ben E. King, all’anagrafe Benjamin Earl Nelson, nacque ad Henderson (North Carolina) nel 1938 e cominciò a muovere i primi passi nel mondo delle sette note verso la fine degli anni Cinquanta insieme alla sua band di allora, i Drifters. Ma già nel 1960 il cantante scelse di concentrare le proprie energie su una carriera solista.

A lui si devono altre canzoni di grande successo come Save the last dance, riproposta tra gli altri anche da Michael Bublè nel suo disco d’esordio, There goes my baby e Supernatural thing.

Il suo fiore all’occhiello resta comunque Stand By Me, hit che si è ritrovata ai vertici delle classifiche americane sia nella versione di King che nelle numerosissime cover con cui svariati artisti da John Lennon a Spyder Turner hanno voluto omaggiare il pezzo originale.
