Anneke Van Giersbergen risponde al test di personalita’ di Soundsblog

L’abbiamo vista di recente in concerto alla Salumeria della Musica a Milano, ammaliando tutti come sempre: Anneke Van Giersbergen era in Italia per presentare il nuovo disco, Drive. Un disco che a prima vista potrebbe essere definito pop-rock, e che per l’intensità di alcuni brani avrebbe diritto all’airplay permanente su molte stazioni radiofoniche nazionali. Eppure, il provenire da un background metal (i The Gathering rimarranno per sempre una “sua creatura”) sembra pesare sulla cantante, che viene osannata solo nei circoli del rock e non davanti al pubblico molto più ampio che si merita.
Anneke si è concessa ai nostri microfoni, per rispondere ad un po’ di domande per conoscerla meglio, e poi sì, per parlare di Drive.

Qual è la cosa che sai fare meglio di chiunque altro fra le tue conoscenze?
Ci sono tante cose che so fare peggio degli altri, tante cose in cui commetto errori. Non sono brava in cucina e sono pessima nel pianificare e organizzare qualsiasi cosa. Però so che son capace di cantare. Il problema è che voglio sempre migliorarmi come cantante, quindi non posso dire di essere meglio delle altre persone che conosco, perchè conosco dei cantanti incredibili. Ma sì, son capace di cantare!

Qual è l’album che hai ascoltato più di tutti, nella tua vita?
Probabilmente The Broadway Album di Barbra Streisand, ma ultimamente sto ascoltando tantissimo Strict Joy dei The Swell, e The Hunter dei Mastodon.

Com’è disposta la tua collezione di cd? Per nome, per data, per etichetta, colore…?
Niente di tutto questo. Se è un buon disco, ce l’ho nella mia libreria di iTunes, è la mia unica classificazione. Ascolto un sacco di musica differente.

Qual è la celebrità incontrata che più ti ha lasciato senza parole?
Quando Sua Santità il Dalai Lama mi ha abbracciata. Ho sentito la sua energia per giorni e giorni.

Qual è la cosa migliore della tua città natale?
I prati verdi, gli alberi e le persone che ci vivono.

Spiegaci perchè il metal è lo stile musicale più importante mai creato dall’uomo.
Quando adori Mozart quanto lo adoro io, dire che il metal è il miglior genere creato dall’uomo è un’affermazione molto azzardata, ma posso dirti che il metal è assolutamente la musica migliore da metter su quando stai usando l’aspirapolvere in casa. L’energia che arriva dal metal è unica.

Quale sarebbe il titolo della tua autobiografia?
1000 acconciature.

Cosa faresti se domattina ti svegliassi e scoprissi di essere James Hetfield?
Mi farei una doccia e canterei Battery solo per me!

Ottimo, Anneke. Ti sei guadagnata il diritto di parlare del tuo nuovo disco, “Drive”…
Questa è la tua occasione di convincerci ad ascoltarlo – e possibilmente anche comprarlo!

Volevo registrare un album pieno di canzoni energiche. Ho scritto un sacco di materiale, e ho continuato a scremarlo perchè volevo tenere solo il meglio del meglio. Sono molto contenta del risultato, perchè è pieno di energia e positività!

In “Treat me like a lady” canti di un uomo che ti mente, che ti chiama baby ma poi ti mette da parte. Chi è il pazzo che ti ha trattata così, nella vita? Sei consapevole che c’è un esercito di adoratori di Anneke pronto a distruggere questo uomo che non ti ha trattato come una dea?
Treat Me Like A Lady è un testo di fantastia, ma penso che ogni ragazza ci sia passata, prima o poi. Ognuno ovviamente vorrebbe essere trattato bene e con rispetto. Un po’ come la canzone di Aretha Franklin, ‘Respect’. Anche se in realtà penso che quella canzone sia stata scritta da un uomo, Otis Redding 😉

Sin da quando hai lasciato i The Gathering, hai prodotto un album all’anno, addirittura due all’anno nel 2009 e nel 2009. Cosa ha fatto esplodere in questo modo la tua creatività, e dove trovi l’ispirazione per continuare a scrivere nuovi brani?
Scrivo costantemente nuove canzoni, di tutti i tipi – scrivo tutto quello che mi va di scrivere. Poi adoro lavorare con altri musicisti, mi ispira molto la collaborazione. Non so… semplicemente amo fare quel che faccio, e finchè l’ispirazione continuerà a scorrere nelle mie vene, continuerò a mantenere questi ritmi.

We asked Anneke some questions about the record, of course, but then we decided it would be the right time to have her answer some leftfield questions and a ‘personality test’. She was so gracious to answer with the right sense of humor that’s required, and we adore even more for this. I wanted to record an album full of energetic songs. I wrote a lot of material, but I wanted to keep only the best of the best. I am very happy with it. It’s full of energy and positivity!

In ‘Treat me like a lady’, you sing about a man who lies to you, calling you baby and then rushing you aside. Who is this fool treating you like this? Do you know that there’s an army of Anneke-lovers who would destroy this man who didn’t treat you like a goddess?
Treat Me Like A Lady is fiction, but I guess every girl has been there. You just want to be treated nice and respectfully. Kinda like the Aretha Franklin song “Respect”. Although I do think that that song is originally written by a man named Otis Redding 😉

Ever since you left The Gathering, you have been putting out an album a year, even two a year with agua de annique in 2007 and 2009. What made your creativity explode like this, and where do you find inspiration for new songs?
I am constantly writing all sorts of songs, whatever I feel like writing. I also love working with other musicians and getting inspired. I don’t know, I just love doing what I do and as long as the inspiration keeps on flowing I’m going to keep this pace up.

What one thing do you do better than any other person you know?
I fail in a lot of things. I’m not much of a cook and I am terrible at planning and organizing, however I do know I can sing. The problem is I always want to better myself as a singer, so I wouldn’t say I’m better than any other person I know, because there are some pretty amazing vocalists out there. But yes, I can sing!

Which album have you listened to more than any other?
I guess The Broadway Album by Barbra Streisand, but lately I would say Strict Joy by The Swell Season and The Hunter by Mastodon.

How do you classify your cd collection? By name, band, date, label… what else?
Not really. If it’s good I have it in my iTunes library, that’s my only classification. I listen to a lot of different styles.

When have you been most starstruck?
When H.H. The Dalai Lama gave me a hug. I felt his energy for days.

What’s the best thing about your hometown?
The green fields, the trees and the people that live there.

09. Why is metal the most important musical style ever invented by man?
When you love Mozart as much as I do that’s a bold statement, but it is absolutely the best music to play when vacuum cleaning the house. The energy that comes from metal is unique.

What would be the title of your biography?
1000 Hairstyles.

What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and you were James Hetfield?
I would take a shower and sing Battery just for me!
